After the premiere screening at the Macedonian Museum in Skopje (October-December 2018), the exhibition of traditional ritual art from the collections of the Museum of African Art will be opened in the home area.
The theme of the exhibition is the art of West Africa – this specific cultural and historical area, where numerous artistic traditions flowered, which are represented in representative collections in MAU collections. Selected objects are ritual purposes related to ritual-religious practice and the corpus of spiritual beliefs, which authentically illustrate the richness of the spiritual reality of the Africans. It is precisely in these examples of folk creativity that the inspiration of creators and the depths of the artist’s lifelong beliefs has come to the fore. The selection of sculptures, mask and fabrics was made with the intention of emphasizing the artistic expression of the folk sculpture of Africa, which during the 20th century was among the most important works of world art.
The exhibition presents about fifty objects of ritual character – masks, sculptures, fabrics, as well as hunting suit and amulets of wood and bones, originating from the West African peoples of Baga, Ashanti, Dogon, Bamana, Yoruba, Senufo, Baule, Dan, Bobo, Mosi . Exhibits were created in the middle and during the second half of the 20th century, and most of them come from the collection of Veda and Dr. Zdravko Pecar, collectors, donors, and designers of the Museum of African Art. The setting is enriched with photographs and archival material, which illustrates the meaning and context of the use of ritual objects.
