Gojko Varda: sixty years old dedicated to design

“Design is the design and creation
in the spirit of human need “- Gojko Varda

Museum of Science and Technology – Belgrade presents an exhibition by Gojko Varda: sixty years old dedicated to design, about Gojko Vardi, one of the most important Yugoslav and Serbian industrial designers, author Milena Vrzic Besic, curator of the Museum. The design was set up by Nevena Prodanovic.
Gojko Varda is among a small number of Yugoslav and Serbian designers whose achievements are worthy of attention and have left an artistic trail in the industry. Gojko Varda’s multifaceted work in the field of industrial design, as well as rich creative opus and tendency to introduce higher quality into industrial production, is the best confirmation of his creative personality and testifies about the person who dedicated his entire life and professional career to design.
There are rare examples from the territory of the former Yugoslavia that one designer materializes his ideas to that extent, despite the environment that has not always understood the importance of his work, which is more important, when it is known that there are not many significant producers in this field.
The exhibition will showcase the exclusive material that is being exhibited for the first time, from projects for interiors and unique achievements, to projects for many products that were produced in serials in factories.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see Varda’s hand-made models, as well as implemented solutions that are accepted for wide production, such as INSA watches, then the GALAXY computer, whose design was designed for Electronics Engineering, TG-90 bulldozer for October 14th from Kruševac, refrigerators for various purposes for Jugostroj, various home appliances for INEX BORAC, lamps for Copper Mill Sevojno, sterilizer for Hidrotehniku from Kladanj, furniture for the Institute of Applied Arts, as well as many other solutions. It is not known the exact number of works and projects Varda made, but it is known that he worked and cooperated with over one hundred companies and factories. One of the first interior designs that he is proud of is the first photo shop in Belgrade, Cinephoto, which was located in the building of the palace of Albania. He also worked for foreign firms, such as Viners of Sheffield from London, for whom he designed cutlery.
Unlike many creators, Varda collected and preserved the material, objects, photographs, correspondences and texts devoted to his work, as well as catalogs. Thanks to such a relationship with his own opus, much of the material is not only exposed for the first time, but has also opened a new field for future research on the history of design in Serbia.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 6 pm, in Gallery 51, at the Museum of Science and Technology, Skenderbeg 51. The exhibition will be opened by prof. arh. Zoran Bulajić.

In 1955 he finished high school and in 1960 he graduated from the Department of Internal Architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts in Belgrade. From the student days to the present, Varda did not cease to improve. The dedication to the work made him an excellent industrial designer, about which he can dedicate the various awards and rewards he received, as well as many articles about his work. Varda himself created models for his items, which showed that he was a great expert in materials and a master craftsman. The award, which particularly affected his life creativity and the understanding of the significance of the school system in the design field, was Ford’s design scholarship awarded to him at the Institute of International Education (II) in New York in 1963. This trip gave him the opportunity to meet and collaborate with significant names of architecture and design, both domestic and foreign. The winner of Ford’s scholarship was also his colleague from Slovenia, Niko Kralj, who with Vard and two other colleagues from Spain and Austria visited many schools, museums and bureaus in America. At that time, friendship and cooperation with Niko Kralj was realized for the future. At the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to see for the first time photo material, letters and documents of extremely important designers, architects and institutions from that trip of young colleagues.
